C-PTSD From Domestic Abuse

When there is a conflict between what we think is right and what we actually do or face then there is stress inside us which affects not just our mind but also our body. Stress makes us nervous when it is of low intensity however if the intensity is high or the frequency of events causing stress is high then the result is not just the nervousness but takes a more serious form of mental illness called anxiety. When someone suffers from anxiety then they feel anxious irrespective of the situation and are unable to cope with it.

There are several anxiety disorders listed in  Diagnostic Statistic Manual- 5 like Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Specific phobia, social phobia, panic disorder, Agoraphobia, PTSD and C-PTSD, etc. Though The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) identifies complex PTSD as a separate condition, the DSM-5 is yet to list C-PTSD as a disorder separate from PTSD. Some mental health professionals however treat C-PTSD as a different disorder.

The difference between these two is that PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is caused due to a single terrifying event however the C-PTSD is caused due to several events in series or a prolonged event.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. Traumatic events that may trigger PTSD include violent personal assaults, natural or human-caused disasters, accidents, or military combat. (Source: https://www.hhs.gov)

CPTSD is caused due to prolonged traumatic events like sex slavery, domestic abuse, childhood abuse or neglect, other types of abuse during childhood due to adversities like poverty or living in a war zone, being a war prisoner, human trafficking, and so on.

Patients with C-PTSD are sometimes misdiagnosed as BPD(Borderline personality disorder) due to overlapping of symptoms in both cases.

According to Pete Walker, author of International Best Seller Complex PTSD: From Surviving To Thriving, Cptsd is a more complex form of PTSD. Its most common five symptoms are emotional flashbacks, toxic shame, self-abandonment, vicious inner critic, and social anxiety. According to Pete, unlike PTSD,  the emotional flashbacks experienced by C-PTSD patients do not have any visual components.

A person with PTSD has visual flashbacks of that single traumatic event that caused the trauma, however in CPTSD, since the trauma is prolonged or reoccurring the brain makes the victim forget the events for survival but at the same time the brain along with the entire nervous system gets habitual of being in survival mode that it forgets to come back to normal response mode.

The defense mechanism of the body involves the release of chemicals and hormones, the brain's specific circuits which further control the other muscles and organs of the body to prepare it for the fight-flight-freeze response. According to Pete Walker, there is a fourth F response known as Faun response which causes the victim to please the abuser due to trauma bonds or Stockholm's syndrome.

A person who has no imprints of trauma on his mind and body will be able to automatically respond to stress by using one of the appropriate Fight, Flight, or freeze trauma responses depending upon the situation. However, a person having an ongoing traumatic life due to abusive conditions, being on survival mode will not be able to properly identify which f-response he needs to adapt as per situation to safely survive and will adopt that which pleases the abuser while minimizing the abuse.

Children of abusive parents and spouses facing domestic violence have been reported to show symptoms of complex trauma. These symptoms persist even after the victim has been rescued from the abusive relationship

Read my blog on "Reason why you cannot heal while staying in an abusive relationship" https://www.theexhaustedsouls.com/2021/05/10-reasons-why-you-cannot-heal-while.html and "Reasons why victims stay in abusive relationships" https://www.theexhaustedsouls.com/2021/01/11-reasons-why-women-are-unable-to.html to understand the relationship dynamics and subtle manipulation that causes the cognitive and behavioral dysfunction and learned helplessness in victims which further pushes them down the hole towards destruction in the hands of complex traumatic stress disorder induced by the abusive behavior of abusers onto their victims.

Emotional flashbacks cause deterioration of mental and consequently the physical health. Toxic shame damages self-esteem and self-love. Inner critic destroys self-confidence and self-worth and the victim loses autonomy and lets the inner critic(i.e., controlling, manipulating, and damaging comments and commands spoken and projected by the abuser to intimidate, ridicule, and coerce the victim are replayed in mind) sabotage happiness, success, and freedom. Social anxiety caused due to the above issues as well as triangulation, manupulation, smear campaign, and other subtly abusive tactics isolates the victim and creates more helplessness.

Visible symptoms of Cptsd are depression, anxiety, irritability, migraines, gastric issues, muscular pains, extreme fear of loneliness, catastrophizing thoughts, black and white or all-or-none thinking, extreme sensitivity to noise when anxious, people-pleasing behavior, anger outbursts, emotional instability, co-dependency, insomnia, unexplained pains and aches and so on.

To ease the pain, victims may adopt harmful coping skills which can further worsen both the abuse as well as mental health of victims.

If you think you or someone you know is suffering from similar symptoms then please reach out for help. Mental health practitioners can help by providing treatments like EMDR, psychotherapy, and medications.

Here are some coping strategies that can be used for survival.

Coping skills

Coping skills can prove effective in dealing with stress if the skills adopted are suited to the needs of the individual. In simple terms, it can be described as ways in which a person tries to deal with the stress experienced by him or her.

There are four types of coping skills adopted by people as per their preferences:- Avoidant, Emotional Focused, Proactive, and Problem Focused.

Avoidant: Avoiding stressful situations.

Emotion Focussed: Managing emotional reaction towards the events causing stress.

Proactive: Directly confronting stressful events. This coping style helps develop a better idea about the stress-creating situation.

There are several physical and mental effects of stress on an individual going through abuse of adversities of life various techniques suggested by professionals and scriptures that can be used for dealing with stress.

The various stress management techniques are relaxation techniques, meditation, mindfulness, cognitive restructuring, and so on.

1. Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques can be used to reduce muscle tension caused due to stress. Muscles tense as a reflex action to guard oneself against injury and harm and relax back when the event passes. When someone has spent considerable time in abusive relationships or adverse life situations, these muscles do not relax independently. Tense muscles cause dysfunction in different body organs, leading to various physiological ailments affecting the overall quality of life.

Relaxation exercises should be carried out in free time, in isolated space, undistracted, and while being conscious of any potential problems like backache, fractures, or other injuries.

2. Mediation

Meditation is the English word for "Dhyana" which means quieting the mind from outer disturbances and focusing on relaxation for attaining awareness and spiritual growth. Meditation also relaxes the body and hence reduces the negative impact of stress.

There are different types of meditations like Transcendental meditation, Vipassana meditation, Guided meditation, Mindfulness meditation, Metta meditation, and chakra Meditation.

Transcendental meditation

This is chanting of mantra or maha-mantra repeatedly for fix number of times usually 108 times on a chanting bead. This is primarily done as a spiritual practice but it also has immense positive effects on physical and mental health. This should be done in a quiet place while focussing fully on the words chanted without any mental or physical distractions. Duration can vary from 15 minutes to 2 hours depending upon the manta.

Vipassana meditation

It involves focussing on different bodily sensations to create a connection between body and mind which helps in self-observation and hence transformation.

Guided meditation

In this method, a guide helps to visualize relaxing and comforting images and scenarios with closed eyes in a quiet place while sitting or lying in a comfortable position.

Mindfulness meditation

This is done by sitting comfortably in a quiet place and honestly focusing on one's thoughts and emotions without being judgemental.

Metta meditation

This is done by sitting at a quiet place in a comfortable position, doing several deep breaths, and then directing love and kindness towards others by repeatedly saying words that express love, kindness, and gratitude towards other people in one's life.

Chakra Meditation.

This involves bringing equilibrium in the seven chakras of our body.

3. Yoga

Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science, which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an art and science of healthy living. The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’. As per Yogic scriptures, the practise of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with that of the Universal Consciousness, indicating a perfect harmony between the mind and body, Man & Nature.

( Source: https://www.mea.gov.in/search-result.htm?25096/Yoga:_su_origen,_historia_y_desarrollo)
Yoga consists of Asanas (bodily postures), breathing exercises, and meditation.
The three main types of Yoga are Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Jnana Yoga. Yoga works on the level of one’s body, mind, emotion, and energy. This has given rise to four broad classifications of Yoga: karma yoga, where we utilize the body; bhakti yoga, where we utilize the emotions; gyana yoga, where we utilize the mind and intellect; and kriya yoga, where we utilize the energy.

( Source: https://www.mea.gov.in/search-result.htm?25096/Yoga:_su_origen,_historia_y_desarrollo)

1. BHAKTI YOGA: Yoga related to devotion.
2. KARMA YOGA: Yoga is related to one's actions.
3. JNANA Yoga: Yoga related to knowledge.

Yoga Asanas
Some important types of yoga asanas beneficial for stress management are:-

Padmasana or Lotus Pose

Sukhasana

Siddhasana

Vajrasana

Trikonasana

Bhujangasana

Note: All poses must be done under the strict supervision of specialist Yoga Instructors only, as any deviation from the desired pose may cause potential harm.

Pranayama: Pranayama is the yogic practice of focusing on the breath. Prana means "vital life force", and Yama means to gain control. In yoga, breath is associated with the prana, thus, pranayama is a means to elevate the Prana Shakti or life energies. In texts like the Bhagawad Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and later in Hatha Yoga texts, it meant the complete suspension of breathing.
Pranayama is mentioned in verse 4.29 of the Bhagawad Gita( Source: Wikipedia)

Pranayam helps reduce stress and is good for the body also.

The process :
Put right thumb on the right nostril and deeply inhale through the left nostril.
Close your left nostril with your right index finger and hold your breath for few seconds.
Exhale through your right nostril.
Repeat the process with the left nostril.

5. Mindfulness
This method involves sitting at a secluded place away from distractions and paying attention to our thoughts and emotions. Practising this exercise regularly gradually makes us a mindful person, one who is aware of his thoughts and emotions all day log during daily activities and not just during the mindfulness session. Becoming mindful can do wonders to the various areas of our lives and relationships

6. Biofeedback
Biofeedback is a technique used to learn to control one's bodily functions. The process involves connecting a person to electrical sensors that display information about his body. Therapists use various biofeedback methods depending on your health problems and goals. Biofeedback types include Brain waves, Breathing, Heart rate, Muscle contraction, Sweat gland activity, and Temperature.

Knowing and understanding the biofeedback can help the person in manipulating and controlling them.

What Are Human Rights ?

In this age of entitlement, narcissism is spreading like an epidemic. People with narcissistic traits are the ones who feel overly entitled to treatment and rights that they actually don't have. However, still, there is a category of people who are not even aware of their basic human rights and are entertaining these overly entitled narcissists at the cost of their own peace of mind, health, and quality of life by unknowingly or knowingly scarifying their own basic human rights.

Don't you ever wonder why is there so much difference in the entitlement level of these two types of people? Well, the reason behind this is the significant difference in the childhood experience, belief system, mental health, parenting type, and cultural influence in these two types of people.

Adults raised in Dysfunctional Families are highly susceptible to this type of codependent behavior in which they keep other people warm by burning themselves all their life while parallelly self-doubting and feeling guilty for not being good enough.

A married woman with 3 kids aged 14,7 and 3 told me that at age 36 she read somewhere that we have the right to say "no" to someone who touches our body without our consent. That was the first time she learned about her right to "consent" and it turned into a life-changing moment of enlightenment for her. After that, she started reading and practicing more and more about self-love. I see so many people around me, especially women who are still not aware of their basic human rights and are living a miserable life full of pain, guilt, confusion, and frustration. I decided to write this blog for anyone suffering from a lack of boundaries especially adult children of Dysfunctional Families and partners of Narcissistic Spouses.
